Oton Župančič Library is situated in the very centre of the city. What marks it out is the Župančič memorial and museum collection which contains the poet's furniture and personal items and is the fruit of cooperation between the library and City Museum. Memorial collection is readily accessible to all library visitors.
On the first floor of the library in the non-fiction section, there is the Health Corner, which is in operation for the purpose of promoting health education. In cooperation with the Central Medical Library, we present good sources of information about health, pharmaceuticals and healthy lifestyle.
In the non-fiction section, there is a rich chess-related collection of material on offer and it is intended for beginners and grandmasters alike. We keep you informed about chess tournaments in Slovenia and abroad and we organize chess courses for beginners. In the chess corner, there are four chess sets at your disposal. You can accept our additional offer and play chess on the Internet.
In the basement of the library, you can visit Mediatheque, a department in which you will find non-fiction material in the field of music, film, theatre and dancing arts with an emphasis on the rich collection of non-book material. We discuss the influence of books on readers in Mediatheque in our monthly meetings entitled I Read, Therefore I Am. The subject matter of the meetings varies. Some books break taboos, others help people to cope with their lives in a better way, and sometimes we resolve ethical dilemmas with the help of books or we look for ways out of various troubles.
On the ground floor of the library, there is the information centre Labour Exchange, on the first floor you can find Knowledge Exchange and the Centre for Self-Directed Learning. They organize various educational and creative workshops.
In the library, we hold many events and have interesting guests. Literary evenings called In the Skin of Words (V KOŽi besede: v=in, koža = skin, beseda = word , KOŽ = Oton Župančič Library) attract a lot of public attention and a large audience. In those evenings , we host authors who are creative in many fields of art. In this way we combine and connect literature with many artistic forms. Meetings are held in the form of discussions, readings, film projection and musical and acting performances.
In the Library, there is the Used-Book Store at your disposal, that is to say removed or donated library material on sale at bargain prices. There is always a wide selection of reference, fiction, young adult and children books on shelves.
